“I believe I must do whatever is important to do. If I have to fight racism, then I have to be more practical and not just vocal.”
Born in Pakistan, Shaukat came to England in 1964, at the age of fifteen. After making friends at youth clubs in Waltham Forest, he became a youth worker and anti-racist
campaigner. He later helped to change the fortunes of an all-white estate in Nottingham.
A dedicated community worker, Shaukat has maintained links with East London’s diverse communities, and was the first non-British Sheriff of Nottingham in the role’s twelve
hundred year history.
